Japan Shoji makes every effort to import timber products only from a healthy, sustainable managed forests, and not clear-cut from a tropical rainforest or the ancestral homelands of forest-dependent indigenous people. Japan Shoji believes in exercising social and environmental responsibility to be sure products are not manufactured with illegal logging or environmental and social damaging practices. These bedroom collections are also manufactured without toxic glues or unhealthy chemicals, paints or stains.
Like the "organically grown" sticker on produce, forest certification is a seal of approval, notifying you that a wood product comes from managed forests. The Nippon Bedroom Collection is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international nonprofit organization that sets standards for responsible forest management and verifies the wood is farmed and sustainable harvested. The collection is also certified E-1, the highest certification from the European Union. This rating system assures you the furniture is assembled without the use of toxic glues, paints, or finishes.
The striking, beautiful Raku Japanese Tatami Bed features authentic Kaiteki tatami mats. This classic Japanese furniture bedframe is made of Indonesian hardwood, which is sustainable harvested wood and only uses natural-based wood stains in dark walnut or honey oak. The tatami mats are 2 1/4 inches thick, made with naturally-harvested rice straw, padded with natural cotton fibers and bound with a high-grade cotton black border on a substantial wood frame.
